While I don't post often and have been playing since 2006 I can agree on the "don't be an a$shat" thought.

Back in the day when you wanted to didn't know and sought an answer it always felt safer and more friendly to post here instead of BG where it always felt if you didn't know the math and exact EVERYTHING then gtfo and crash your account. People ask questions cause they're looking to better themselves; not be annoying. They ~could~ keep running around in full aurore/perle/setofscaryarmorhere with lvl 70 weapons stomping around with the thought of "ill do wut i wants, tuff crap". I'd rather see them ask and be pointed in the right direction even if it didn't seem like they looked. Takes like, 2 min. to reply to a post.

You shouldn't be using the internet if you get offended easily much less playing an MMO. I propose we spark a new campaign called "STOP THE CODDLING" and verbally destroy anyone that gets butthurt about anything posted on an lolgameforum. I bet we would get volunteers to lead that death squad in a heart beat.

I do not disagree, however, some people have very limited time to play, 1-3 hours per night at best, and after working 9 hours, taking care of kids, paying bills, and handling all the real life stresses, they just want to relax and play their favorite FF game for a bit, and maybe get a few game questions answered.

Not waste their precious limited time going to war on a forum with a select group of individuals who can only feel better about themselves by putting others down.

Those of us in that boat...I dare say are not the target audience. I mean the person you described is I would say is the average-Joe and I don't think Joe is going to get his feelings hurt from loldouchebag trolling on a forum. I get unhappy if my kiddos pee in a flower pot after I just finished planting the dang thing not if some guy posts my gear setup sucks and I'm a noob. Those people...F'em you know. Should never get stressed out playing FFXI nor posting on game related issues.

Glad to see this ... When I fist started 8 years ago people were lined up and ready to help. They got their top status and showed it off by helping others. Not standing around Jeuno looking cool and yelling "I'm BORED" in their ls, while waiting for the perfect moment "for them" to bounce.

The game has changed for the worse in many ways. But hey, it's still here and you can find the nice people. Jus avoid the asshats and life is good. Anyone that says "Let me see if you're worthy" is definitely an Asshat. Stay away!

Having said all that:
If you are a casual player ... don't expect the world. Don't even expect help. The ones ho do put in extra time effort get rewards and when a dweeb comes along wanting it all, but is clueless (like me). They end up wasting valuable time. Lots of it. See ... Asshats come in all shapes and sizes.

Clifnotes:
If everyone would just give a little. Nobody would have to take. It's really *** simple!

Normally in the past how FFXIAH has worked, the answer to the OP's question would be answered within the first 5 posts or so. Anything after that is just funny/troll responses, among countless replies after the original problem has been solved.

Seeing as the last time I used FFXIAH, was this era. I can attest to it completely :3

I actually noticed the change when I started looking at FFXIAH recently and ffxi in general among other things (might be playing again). So yeah... keep it nice. Answer shet and don't answer shet if you don't wanna :D

Douchbaggery is needed, because as humble as they appear to be on the forums..its the same jerks who kick you from a party and screw you over in game that usually ask the question a player at their level should have already learned. If the world was all honky dory then it would be a perfect place...but wake up...its not. Hell if it wasnt for this forum and their keen and not so nice response to information that isnt accurate..most of the time i would have just said things what i THNK before doing any research at all. Now it hits me...if i can do the research to the point where i can come up with an acceptable answer by the community...so can the poster...its not like we do not have wiki, BG, at our disposal..

Perhaps this website needs a mentor section like the game does? People could sign up for being a mentor, perhaps saying what areas of the game they can provide advice in? For example I have no clue about all the new endgame stuff such as VW, WoE etc, so obviously I wouldn't be able to help anyone asking questions like that. But I could help brand new people, especially people needing WHM advice, or cooking advice etc.

The website could have a box or something which shows mentors online and what they specialise in, so people can PM them directly, therefore bypassing the douche bags. Also it may encourage them to make posts in the future, because it's always intimidating making a new thread when your new in any forum. Especially if you've been reading a lot of threads and seen people shot down by the same rude individuals.

Sometimes it's better to get information described by numerous individuals that can articulate a manner that might be a bit more understandable to them than trying to break down or analyze a single paragraph on BG or Wiki which more often than not, fails to shed light on other indirect, yet relevant pieces of information to the matter.

So multiple answers are definitely the way to go, that way the OP can take in what they need, from however many posts bring about the necessary information (granted it has validity).

That would be so tight. For seriously. I'd definitely go for that, well... as long as I'm playing xD It's a neat idea. Howeva it seems kinda silly at the same time. I'd still do it :3

Would be nice if people could submit for a "mentor" position, and subsequently be approved by admins or mods. Similar to Kalli's "VIP" status and purple bar. Essentially a way of tagging a particular poster in saying they have been proven to provide valuable and accurate information regarding the game and can contain their ego.

It would actually be a great idea that way even new folks will be able to differentiate between being led onto failure and people legitimately helping to point them in the right direction.

I answer what I can, in the most concise and understandable way I know. When the fellow was looking for a heavily detailed breakdown, I forwarded him to wiki after a brief explanation. It's not hard, and I find it personally rewarding.

I'd be down for a mentor program. I'd volunteer. I get enough PMs with questions as it is, so it wouldn't really be a big change for me.

I dare say posters would know better who could be a mentor rather than moderators. Since it's something that simply relates to game knowledge.

I like this idea but the thing is it would need to be people who are proven to know their stuff. The reason being that with it being one on one vs an open thread it is too easy for someone to be given false info, not necessarily on purpose if the person they asked didn't know better.

An example could be someone saying eva magian katana is the best off hand for Blade: Hi because of the agility. I say that one because it seems to come up often and in truth it is the strenght one (my info may be out dated since I havn't been paying attention the last couple months so don't take this too seriously) and Kamome when inside abyssea. The person who asked about it would then think the eva one was best and tell their friends who were wondering, then they tell their friends and the false info starts to become thought of by many as fact. (not that theirs anything wrong with useing one if you want/need the evasion but from an optimization standpoint it isn't your best choice)

Theres nothing wrong with some criticism imo as long as it stays constructive... I think at times the problem is that being text format it can end up being seen as an insult if it is worded to the point and then it degrades from there. Just my 2 cents atleast.

No...If you give people a color they are going to be a mentor just for that and not actually to help anyone.

I'd be up to mods and admins to approve submissions for a mentor position. They'd have to prove their worth to become one before they can gloat their colors. Besides, we only really need a small handful. Not everyone worth their salt in regards to in-game knowledge needs one.

I would hope those seeking information would know when people are generally helpful and those that are being sarcastic and rude. The mentor thing is just a nice little "seal of approval" kind of thing in regards to getting FFXI questions answered.

The other problem is that mods and admins would have to make sure that those who receive mentor status would be people who are not eager to bite those with legitimate questions.

well obviously there would be apps and we would see their contribution if that idea was done. it can be just how kalila does it, no powers just a color but as a contributing mentor for information to give the answer for the info someone seeks. and rep of ffxiah.com.

can take the bar away if they arent going to mentor

What happened to people just asking what they wanted to ask, however "dumb or unnecessary".. and mods just deleting rude and overly trolled comments/handing out infractions when/where need be ? Lock the thread after sufficient advice has been giving to said "new players", or whatever. Like someone said earlier, q's get answered within a few posts (most of the time at least), and its pretty much easy to figure out where to cut the thread off.

Looks like a lot of discussion for nothing.. imo
