Unlike the forums you visit, we don't have a dedicated team of rule enforcement or people up and online around the clock to listen and answer to people's inquiries or complaints. We have very few self-volunteered moderators, and admins that intended this site as a fun side project; not a job or obligation. So is it really so hard to believe that what few moderators we have ask the community to practice self control, or do you honestly expect 2-3 people to consistently solve all the problems of the hundreds of posters we have?

It's as much your job to not be a jerk, as it is their job to take care of jerks.

I agree with all of that, but my sentiments the same. These said other forums dont have paid help either, just volunteers that frequent the site a lot and have good heads on their shoulders.. They usually only have like 10 or so mods and a couple admins too, on FAR higher traffic sites. FFXIAH's actually really low on the forum traffic comparatively to others Im talking about, really shouldnt be to hard to clean up rude/trolling posts, and handing out infractions where they need to be handed out, especially with such a wide range of posters around the world viewing site 24/7, with even just a couple extra mods. Again, just my opinion.

Now let me ask you, is it harder having a few people just keep the site clean, or having HUNDRED and hundreds of people practice self control/police themselves. The former is, imo.. People are animals.

edit: idc either way, personally, only chiming in with my 2c. I used to use ffxiah browsing forum threads for info but.. yeah, having to sift through piles of garbage to find a shred of info got annoying. My ffxiah usage now is pretty much 98% checking prices/shout monitoring, and the very rare google search with ffxiah included in the inquiry.

No...If you give people a color they are going to be a mentor just for that and not actually to help anyone.

I'd be up to mods and admins to approve submissions for a mentor position. They'd have to prove their worth to become one before they can gloat their colors. Besides, we only really need a small handful. Not everyone worth their salt in regards to in-game knowledge needs one.

I would hope those seeking information would know when people are generally helpful and those that are being sarcastic and rude. The mentor thing is just a nice little "seal of approval" kind of thing in regards to getting FFXI questions answered.

I'm going to have to disagree entirely. The moderation team has shown on many an occasion that they're not the least bit interested in correctness. Based on our individual posting styles, people like Nightfyre, Prothescar, Austar, and myself, who typically stand to offer the most accurate and unbiased advice available on this forum have virtually no chance of consideration. It disturbs me to imagine who would be selected when smashing as many rainbows and smiles into a post as one can takes indisputable precedence over providing valid information.

I won't disagree with you that people more often than not are animals and fail to practice self-moderation. However, as I've noted before, mods are under no obligation to police the site 24/7. They're regular people and posters like us, only with the ability to edit, move, delete or ban particular posters/threads, etc.

The sad part is, people shouldn't need to be reminded that there are repercussions and consequences to unacceptable behavior. But if it can help keep people in line, even if only temporarily to root out the problems as they arise, then I'm all for it. This thread I feel was necessary given the recent rise of redundant threads and the subsequent slew of sarcasm and downright rudeness.

Though, it works both ways; newcomers that fail to use general site functions and create threads of redundancy is equally rude and unnecessary. Hence why we're here discussing solutions to remedy both the redundancy and unwarranted acrimony.

People take offense at being told that they are wrong.

While this is often true; Minjo's choice of vocabulary and blunt disposition may ultimately become counter productive to providing information to those that humbly seek information or may currently stand in the wrong. Though I certainly cannot pass judgment, as correcting people in a polite and constructive manner is more difficult than it is not, given the typical reaction of those dealing with said corrections.

It is a difficult subject to explain as there is validity to those that take offense, and those that simply overreact and have trouble accepting things other than what they want to hear.

In the event where someone is asking a stupid question that's already been answered 400 times, yet I find it in the kindness of my soul to answer it a 401st time, only to receive a response like "LOL BUT WHER UR NUMBERZ" or "NO THATSWRONG I HAVE A PARSE", you best believe I'm going to be agitated. Particularly when they show that they don't appear to have the mental fortitude or knowhow to provide and sort of evidence to the contrary of my information, nor anything to otherwise back up their claims. This is called misinformation, and there are a lot of people who either don't understand or don't want to understand that what they're reading is wrong, however since it's usually the easier or less intelligence-driven alternative, they'll go for that instead.

As I see it here, you're catering to the carebears without locking them down as well. Stupid threads that devolve into Ask Question -> Get Answer -> Say The Answer Is Wrong should be closed before the potential for spreading of misinformation is allowed to occur instead of prosecuting those of us who are actually contributing worthwhile information.

@The mentor idea: A little widget on the site similar to Wiki Answers where only certified contributors can answer questions would work.

I agree that those seeking information should be held with equal responsibility as those providing information. Rooting out misinformation and validating those known to provide well articulated and accurate responses is only one half of the spectrum. It is also up to those seeking information to use the search function, not create threads for every inquiry, practice humility and judgment as to what they accept as an answer and to not retort with unwarranted malice or misinformation themselves.

Quite frankly, if the only thing that comes out of this is Asym getting a pink mentor stamp with a Charis Tiara wrapped around it, I'd call it a success.

Edit: Flower included. None of that unisex hogwash.

Tbh I think it's a bit naive to think that people would read a guide to how to post before posting...at least if it's not in a very visible place where they actually could bother to check it out. I mean the search function is right there but people don't use it, what makes you think they'd read a guide when they can't be bothered to even do that?

@Artemecion: People are easily put into defensive mode however, largely because of the mentality that crops up in those threads. They feel cornered, and lash out. Their problem is that, typically, they're not articulate, they're not quickly adaptable, and they're not forum-goers, so they're at a clear disadvantage when pushed up against someone who is 2-3 of those things, and aggressive. It puts them in a position where they panic and make fools of themselves.

There are the arrogant types that crop up, who create threads with ulterior motives, but they prefer the public spotlight. They would most likely ignore a mentor system, posting in the forum so that there's an audience.

its not naive to me. its made for ppl to point the person to find the things they can do here. you dont get the pm's of "how do i do this, what is that, is there a, etc." so it was made to help.

it may not be in a visible place but if u read the thread...there is more to it than features.

When you register an account, sending an automated PM or having a link to the forum rules right in the Sign-up complete page might be beneficial. I know a few forums that employed one or both of those strategies.

Yes but the problem is that you assume people will read it to begin with. If they can't be bothered to read ready-made threads to answer one question that they then regurgitate, why would they go through the trouble of reading a novel-sized primer to the website? Threads based on similar topics share similar names, and popular questions are usually on the front page of any job forum. Seeing them isn't hard.

Well that's nothing short of ironic, and strangely apt.

Short answer is: Yes.

right and since its not visible, instead of bashing them, point to the thread and even i can have them look at it.

we have suggested many times to scragg for making it on the front etc but i dunno reason of why it cant or if its just slipped off the to do list. so til that day happens, the thread was made.

and btw why would ppl assume theyd read the wiki even if u put it, kinda goes round and round with same thing. soo im just trying to get ppl to at leas help than be a douche

I wouldn't direct anyone to the wiki to begin with, so I would hope they aren't reading it.

And we link to threads that exist almost constantly. The problem is that new people don't go into the existing threads to see the linked threads to answer their question, so it's a perpetual circle of the same questions being recycled over and over and over instead of someone taking all of 10 seconds to click another link and educate themselves. Laziness and inability to read shouldn't be an excuse on an internet forum that's already so developed.

The "new players" thread is just another thing for them to not look at. By the time it's linked, the damage is done, and the link is for only a couple of people out of the droves.

Your account is saved to the servers so the move to 360 is easy. The only problem you encounter is you have to at least have a Silver Xbox Live membership and link your gamertag to your FFXI account. Once it's linked you can't get it unlinked (without calling FFXI help center). Only bad thing is you'd lose all your macros you had.

Save your macros to the server.
